Labor figure claims privacy breach: controversy over property use

26/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
BRIMBANK political identity Hakki Suleyman says he will refer to the Ombudsman the leaking of claims of financial irregularities in rental payments on the St Albans property used by the Australian Turkish Cypriot Welfare Association.

The Advocate has been told by a council insider that two cheques, used to pay quarterly rent on the Biggs Street property earlier this year, had bounced.

Asked about the claims, Mr Suleyman, the association's president, said he had "no comment at all" and would be referring the matter to the Ombudsman, citing a breach of privacy.

Brimbank Council charges the Australian Turkish Cypriot Welfare Association $1200 a year to lease the building, but the address is also listed on the ALP website as the Maryibyrnong branch (Turkish) of the Labor Party.

Mr Suleyman is employed as an electorate officer for state Planning Minister Justin Madden.

Brimbank's community and wellbeing general manager Kelly Grisby said the council did not comment on the status of its accounts.

In July, the Advocate reported that Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association president Darlene Reilly had asked the council to investigate the use of the building.

Thankyou for bringing this to our attention. Mr Sukeyman has a lot to answer for.
