Mayor denies deception claims

BRIMBANK Mayor Sam David has denied allegations of community deception levelled at him by a fellow councillor.

Cr Miles Dymott made the claims in a letter last week following statements Cr David made to the Advocate that he had diverted funds from Sunshine parks because he was worried a proposed road tunnel could destroy them.

Earlier this year, the Advocate revealed Cr David had asked that more than $1.2 million in park projects be reallocated in the 2008-09 budget.

Cr David and deputy mayor Kathryn Ericksson successfully proposed that $1 million be provided to build a pavilion for a soccer club of which Cr David is a life member. $700,000 was later approved for the project.

At a public meeting held in Sunshine in July to discuss Sir Rod Eddington's proposed east-west road project, Cr David did not mention his concern for Sunshine parks. However, last week he told the Advocate that he had seen sketches of the proposed tunnel's route and was worried about open space.

In his letter, Cr Dymott accused Cr David of trying to justify the funding reallocation in the wake of the Ombudsman's announcement of an investigation into Brimbank Council, which Cr David emphatically denied.

"I saw those sketches and I could see it could go over the whole south-west of Sunshine," he said.

Brimbank chief executive officer Nick Foa confirmed he had attended a briefing about Sir Rod Eddington's report with Cr David on April 2.

In a statement responding to the Advocate's inquiries last week, a Brimbank Council spokeswoman said: "The council later sought clarification on the issues of possible impact on local areas and received information that enabled it to create a more detailed alignment which was discussed at the July 1 community information session on the Eddington report. This graphical alignment plan did not indicate possible impact on local open space."
